Let's talk business....

Etsy business to be more specific.

I've heard about a thousand and one times that being seen on the front page of etsy is great exposure. I've now experienced it twice.

The first time was brief. Like 3 seconds, give or take a few. I was looking at the homepage and happened to refresh, and a new treasury popped up. I was shocked to see my own earrings there, and instantly remembered the advice I'd read that if you can do it, make a multiple listing so that if one sells your picture will remain on the home page giving you more exposure. I clicked my item to update the quantity and it was already sold. Literally that fast. It was great to have a sale, but I would have hoped for a bit more exposure!

Yesterday I found myself in that situation again. I clicked etsy and noticed that my necklace was on the front page. This one was a one of a kind, so I couldn't increase the quantity. Instead I looked at the views on it - 131. Not bad, not good, just an average number of views that item had received. I wandered around etsy for a while and about 5 minutes later I looked again to see what the views had done. It was over 800! That is crazy good exposure, people!! Crazy good. You can't pay for advertising anywhere I know of and get that many hits in that amount of time.

The necklace did end up selling, which I am thrilled with. But more than that I recognize the importance of being seen on the front page of etsy now! So how does one get there? Well, it's a bit of skill and a lot of luck. Etsy members create Treasuries, which are little galleries. (Even getting the chance to create a treasury means being in the right place at the right time.) Many have themes of some sort. (The one I was in yesterday was red/turquoise.) Every day, several times a day, an etsy admin chooses a treasury to be shown on the front page. These vary widely in color and theme, but the one thing they all have in common is that they're eye catching. Every picture/listing in that treasury must have a great photo. So that's where the skill comes in. Online sellers have to have good photos in order to get buyer's attention.

And then you hope you get chosen for a treasury, and then you hope that treasury gets chosen for the front page of etsy... Easy, right? ;-)

Congrats on being on the front page of etsy! I've been there twice myself and sold both times, too. It is great exposure if you manage to stay visible long enough.

I think I've been on there a few times, but I usually see friends up there and cheer for them.

Congrats, Beki! :-)

Nice job outlining how to get on the front page, but don't forget that mercury has to be in retrograde and various other stars have to be perfectly aligned! In 2+ years, I've made it to the front page twice (that I know of).

Woo Hoo!

Isn't it AWESOME?!
I was lucky that a few friend/fellow vendors let me know when I have been on the front page...I would have missed them entirely!

I agree IT'S amazing ADVERTISING!
I know that I too click on anything that might catch my eye when I first log in on the main page!
