Unplug It Challenge!

I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a while and now I'm presenting it to you.

Last summer I started what we called "no media day" with our family.

This meant one day a week we would turn off the computer and tv and leave them off all day. NO computer or tv at all! Thursday was the day that worked best for us.

What I found was that it was much harder than I expected it to be and I failed many times. But I also found that we spent more time as a family and enjoyed each other more. We went to more parks together, went for walks and bike rides, had more conversations. It was extremely eye opening.

So now I'm offering the challenge to you as well.
Pick one day of the week and make it your "Unplug It" day.
Figure out what is sucking your precious time and get rid of it for just one day a week. Is it your computer? Your cell phone? Texting? Tweeting?
Your kids may hate you for it at first, but I really think it will change your life like it did mine.

During the school year it's too crazy for us to attempt it, but we'll be starting again as soon as school lets out for summer. However, we're rolling into Spring, and some of you homeschool so I thought some of you may want to start earlier.

We start the week school lets out and will end when school starts again.

Sign in if you're up for the challenge. Feel free to grab the button the ultra talented Nikki made for this challenge. Share it on your blog, facebook, myspace, etc. Tweet about it. Whatever you're comfortable with.

Hey! Just wanted to let you that I'm planning to take your challenge. But, we're leaving for out of town for a couple days starting tomorrow....then I'm up at the Base Friday for a whole week! So we'll get started the week after next!

Sounds like fun...I think....

What a fabulous idea!!! I (and Hubby) really need a break from the computer and some of the horrible reality tv that is turning our brains into much ;)
Thanks for sharing this idea!

I'm pretty sure we would only make it until 8 a.m. I know I'd be the worst--My computer is attached to me almost 24 hours a day.
We don't have cable right now, but we still manage to watch plenty of tv with shows being on the internet like they are.
We will certainly make an effort, though! This will be so good for so many people.

This is great! A couple weeks ago I decided I would not be on the computer again in front of my son, at all. It has been GREAT!!! I wasn't on much in front of him anyway, but every once and a while, I would go to the office and browse for 20 minutes or so...and now when I have that urge I have to redirect that and do something with him. I have really really enjoyed it!!

I'm in. We already don't have cable so TV won't be as hard as prying everyone away from the computer. Now the weather is getting nicer too, Thursdays will be our day to get out more.

We have been doing this for about a year now after I saw it in my 'body and soul' magazine. I call it our 'media diet saturday'. It is so refreshing, and is easier than I thought it would be. We end up going to long walks, playing board games, ALL helping make dinner or a dessert, or sometimes we all grab a book and read. I think we will bump up our media diet saturday for this up coming one. Thank you for posting this challenge, I'm curious to see how everyone else does it!

I forgot ot mention we only do this once a month. I think my family would start to protest if I tried it every saturday.

I always wonder how I survived life pre-iPhone LOL. I'd imagine this challenge would be great for seeing the world around me again. I don't know if I could give everything up but it certainly wouldn't hurt to try one or two things. :)

I thought about giving up blogging for Lent! BLOGGING is my big TIME SUCK!

But...it is such a creative outlet....so...I didn't...

but I will say this...when I dont blog, or sit at the computer doing whatever it is I do....my kids and hubby get way much more of me.

And sex. There is more sex for sure. (not for the kids)
