...and BOOM goes the dynamite.

Our 4th of July was underwhelming.

Last year we went to Cripple Creek late in the day for the fireworks.
The remains of a wonderful street fest were everywhere and while we were a bit disappointed that we'd missed it, we knew that Cripple Creek would be our new 4th of July tradition.
Tons of events, all day long. Happy kids. Happy families. Americana at it's best.

But this year it stormed, nearly all day long on the 4th of July in the mountains.
There was one small break and the kids had a "tea party" on the front porch of the cabin.

Finally, in the afternoon, we decided to head to Cripple Creek hoping to still catch some of the festivities before the fireworks.

Problem. They didn't do anything this year! :(
The only thing they had was a little spot for kids to mine for gold.
Everything else was focused on the casinos and un-family friendly activities.

We did get to see the fireworks, and it was a very nice display.
But we won't be headed back to Cripple Creek.
Apparently that was a one year tradition for us.
Next time we'll stick to the midwest where we can see parades, wear tank tops (it was 54 degrees there! There were people in parkas and ski hats!), eat popsicles, and drink lemonade.

On an entirely different note: I was nominated recently for a blog award for Best Eye Candy.
How cool!
And while it would've been fun to win, I'm not one to campaign.
I feel weird asking for votes.
I could never be a politician.
I feel like the girl in Napoleon Dynamite - "Vote for Summer!"

Plus, I sort of think Pioneer Woman can do no wrong (not that I'm a stalker or anything... ahem) so I followed her lead.
I did put a little link down on the right "I like" column, but that's it.
So thank you for the nomination and thank you for the votes!!
I'm completely flattered.
I lost big, and I'm totally okay with that.
I still love my blog, my readers, and what you allow me to do here.

You don't need awards to know people like your blog, comments, followers, etc. tell you people like you/your blog and what you have to say.

Boo to Cripple Creek for letting you down. Love how the boy is concentrating. So cute!

Such great pictures! =) Sorry you didn't win, but I do admit I love your blog and coming to see what you post. So much so, I'm giving you an award. It's probably not as cool as nominating you for eye candy, but know that you are loved! =)

We spent the day in Divide at the in-laws. The thunder and lightening was all the 'fireworks' we got. Oh and the bear on the front porch. :o) That's a bummer that Cripple Creek wasn't more family friendly this year. I enjoy your pictures. You capture life in such a real light.

Those are some awesome pictures.
I'm sorry they changed the program on you to something less family friendly.

What a bummer that your 4th wasn't what you expected but at least you spent time with your family! :)

Colleen, you saw a bear on your porch in Divide?! I'm so jealous!! We were on a "bear hunt" the entire trip and never saw one. My son and I both constantly had our cameras ready, looking everywhere.

No bears to be found for us, this time though.

(by the way, are you the Colleen that I knew from there?)

I think Clare said it best. You don't need an award to know that people like your blog and think you have great talent!

Not begging for votes says a lot about you and your blog!
