Fingerprint Friday

There is a song by Steven Curtis Chapman that says:
I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you
I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know its true
You're a masterpiece
That all creation quietly applauds
And you're covered with the fingerprints of God

So look around you and see where YOU can see God's fingerprints. Is it in nature? Kids? Animals? Where do you see them? Here's how to join in.

1. Blog with your interpretation of God's fingerprints. Be sure to link back here so others can find the entire list of participants.

I love how kids are so careless.
Obviously it would be dangerous without parents to give them guidance sometimes.
But they see nothing wrong with rolling in the grass, jumping off curbs, and splashing in puddles.
They don't worry about what other people think or who's watching.
They laugh out loud with no worries.

That's my prayer for this week: Lord help me to be more carefree and childlike.

Bright spot.

We are in the thick of things over here.
Heavy remodeling being done on the farmhouse. (Hopefully cabinets will get installed this weekend!)
Swamped with Mother's Day orders.
Every day The Man works at his job.
I work at home.
He comes home, we scramble for dinner, and then we all head up to the farmhouse to work more.
We come home at bedtime and start over again the next day.

You're jealous of my glamorous life, aren't you? Ha!

Anyway, I'm very ready for a vacation. Ready for things to settle down a bit.
But until then, here's a bright spot in the middle of this week.

Happy Hump Day!

My kid's better than your kid.

I have to say that one of my biggest pet peeves in parenting is the whole comparison thing that parents tend to do.

You know the kind I'm talking about.
You're talking to them and the entire conversation is about - "Johnny is the star of his little soccer team!"
"Suzy is only 4, but a concert pianist."
"Have you seen my little Sally's crayon art? It's amazing! Colleges are already calling."
"Jimmy did the most amazing thing with his playdough the other day. He developed a cure for the common cold!"

Yeah. Well, I ask you this - Can your kid wink with both eyes?
Does your kid have crazy psycho Jack Black eyebrows at only 3 years old?
Can your kid impersonate a pirate better than any actor at Disneyworld?
Well?!!
Mmmhmm. That's what I thought.

Who's kid is amazing now, huh?!

You're impressed, aren't you?

Badger Creek

If you haven't been following along here, we bought a farmhouse.
We're remodeling it before we move in.
There's a badger living in one of our barns.

The Man shot it.
And it ran into it's hole.
We blocked up the holes with concrete.
But he's back.
The Man has seen him several times.
And badgers are mean.
So now we have traps set.

The Man called me the other night to say he'd caught something in the trap.

It wasn't the badger.
It was a possum.
It was curled up in the corner of the trap.
Cold and sleeping.
So The Man let go.
I think he was a bit fond of the little guy.
But we still have the badger.
And a creek runs through our property.

Grandpa tells a story of when a badger chased his tractor tires for over a mile once.

Someone else told us that he and his buddies had run over a badger in their pickup truck once.
Hit him square on with the tires.
And saw that badger run away afterward in their rearview mirror.

Someone else told us a story of a badger that killed their pit bull.

We're really not fans of this badger.
He could go away and we'd be alright with that.

The fish can stay.
The pheasant can stay.
The wild turkeys can stay.
The deer can stay.
Even the possums can stay.

But the stubborn badger needs to go.

I think the name of our farm is now officially Badger Creek.
I want a sign that says that. For real.
I'd hang it on the barn.
Or over the driveway.
Or in my living room.

Badger Creek.

One more thing.
The Baby picked flowers for you.

I tend to be a shortsighted person.
If it's not in my immediate future, I have a hard time recognizing that it will happen.

And I hate to admit it, but sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that this isn't all there is to life.
This world, in all it's beauty and ugliness, is only temporary.
There will come a day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess before God!

What a powerful reminder that He is King and He is in control!

“It is written: " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.”- Romans 14:11

Country Living ... and me!

Country Living and me... we're like *this*.

And they like my feet.

Okay, I made that part up. Sort of.

Remember my confessions recently?

A few days later, I discovered that Country Living was digging that blog post and created a new contest based on it.
This was their Facebook page.

It says, "Contest time! We want to see pictures of you chilling out with your copy of Country Living! Post 'em here or email them to mfinkelstein@hearst.com, and you could see yourself on our website. Use this pic of Beki from TheRustedChain as inspiration!"

Groovy, huh?

So get creative! Look over the photography tips if you need to.
Take some pictures of yourself hanging out with your Country Living magazine.
Send them in.

You never know where they'll end up!

Little Birthday Cakes.

That's what The Baby calls these.

These would be adorable for a rainbow party.
Or a casual wedding!
Or a last minute treat for your kid's class.
Or a Wizard of Oz party.
Or a "Welcome to Kansas" party.
Or a "I'm sorry you fell and skinned up your knee, let's make it all better" treat.
Or a slumber party with a bunch of squealing girls.
Or just a happy day celebration.

1 stick butter
1 bag marshmallows
4 cups crisp rice cereal
2 cups fruity pebbles cereal
frosting
sprinkles

Melt the butter and marshmallows over low heat. When it's thoroughly melted and combined, remove from heat and mix in the cereal.

Press firmly into cupcake tins. When cool, frost and top with sprinkles.
(We put ours in the freezer to speed them up.)

It takes only 5 minutes and will make the people who eat these verrrry happy!

How to take pretty pictures.

Bold title, no?

I get questions emailed to me all the time about this, so I'll tackle a little bit of it here.

~ You don't have to have a fancy dslr camera, in my opinion. You'll be amazed at what can be done with a point and shoot, if you learn to do it.

~ Be prepared to study. Read your camera manual. Then read it again. And probably 12 or so more times. No fun, I know. But it must be done.

~ Learn to turn off your flash. No flash, you hear me? No flash.

~ Learn to adjust your ISO. This has to do with the amount of light you're letting in to your camera. High ISO means more light, low ISO means less light is coming in.

Bright sunlight should have a very low ISO, like maybe 100.
Indoors, you'll have to increase your ISO since you're now no longer using your flash. Play around with it and you'll figure out what works.
Try it at 400. Try it at 800. Try to go as high as your camera will allow.

The other thing you need to know about ISO is that the higher the number, the more noise or grain you'll get in your pictures. It's just one of the tradeoffs.
Grain = bad.
Flash = worse.

~ When you can, shoot outdoors in a shady spot. Not in direct sun.
Full sun will make your subjects (if they're people) squint and that's never flattering.
It will also give very harsh shadows and usually that's not attractive.

~ Learn to shoot in aperture priority. You'll find instructions in your camera manual. I told you you have to read it! (Once you've mastered aperture priority, you can move to manual which is a whole new world! Once you're in manual, you'll never look back.)

Aperature priority means that you set the aperture, and let the camera decide the shutter speed.

~ Aperture... The lower number you have, the more narrow your focus. (I wish I had photo examples to put here!) Think of this - You're looking at a flowering tree. If you want the entire tree to be in focus equally, you'll need a higher aperture number, like 11 or so. If you want only one flower to be in focus and the rest to be blurred, you'll need a lower aperture number like 4, or 3.2, or 1.8. (Different cameras will allow different numbers. If you have a dslr, it's the lens that will determine how low you can go in aperture.) Just go as low as you can if you want to narrow the focus.

Again, if you want all flowers in focus = high number. One flower in focus = low number.

~ That pretty blurred background is called bokeh. Sometimes it's lovely. Sometimes it's strange.

~ Photography is just like any other art form. What appeals to some, doesn't to others! If it's a photo that you love, then it's perfect no matter what someone else might think.

~ Often it's best to not have people looking at the camera. Focus on capturing moments, in real time! Not posing the kids and having them say cheese.

~ Try a different angle. Maybe have your kids lay on the grass and you stand above them while shooting straight down. Or the opposite - you lay on the grass and have them above you leaning over. Climb under the dining room table and get pictures of their feet dangling off the chair. Try something besides the obvious straight on face shot. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I think!

~ Some of my favorite photos came from a point and shoot camera. (apparently a few years ago I thought that ripped edge border was crazy rad.)

~ Use an editing program. You will never ever ever see a photo nowadays in a magazine that hasn't been edited in some way. I think of editing like makeup. You can take a very pretty face and make it stunning with makeup. You can take a pretty picture and make it stunning with editing. But you can also ruin it by going too far. In my opinion, a light hand is best. But as I said before, photography is a subjective art. I use Photoshop. You can find very inexpensive ones as well, and most cameras come with one. Add a touch of contrast, boost the color saturation a bit...

~ Any questions? Have fun!

New, exclusive, and fabulous!

I've already told you it's been a busy week around here.

My head is spinning.
Is it vacation time yet?
If I design a Disney inspired necklace, will I get free Disney trips for a lifetime?
Hmmm..

No, actually they'd just sue me. That doesn't sound like fun.
Anyway, here are some new things -

You'll Be In My Heart

Amazing Grace necklace

These Old Things earrings

But my favorite new pieces are these, that combine my two passions jewelry designing and photography!
This camera stamp was created exclusively for us so it can't be found anywhere else!

I Shoot People necklace

Capture Life necklace

Which is your favorite?
Hi ho, hi ho... it's back to work I go!

Blather...

That just means a bunch of random nonsense, right?
I hope so.
I really should look up words before I start using them.

I love my businesses.
I have spent countless hours studying, learning, and practicing photography.
I don't want to be an "MWAC". (Mom With A Camera.) It seems that anybody and everybody nowadays does photography.
So much so, that there's a term for it! MWAC.
It's a great hobby.
I strive to set myself apart and work toward being in the top tier of photographers.
I love getting feedback from my photography clients. Often I hear, "Whoa. I knew you were good, but I didn't know you were that good!"
That means I've done my job well!
Summer photo shoots are starting to roll in. If you'd like portraits, just email me for details. Remember, I have a gorgeous farm to work with now. Ha!

I've also worked long and hard to establish The Rusted Chain.
And I'm thrilled when it does well. Right now we are just swamped with Mother's Day orders.
I'm not complaining. I love being busy.
But when I get this busy it seems like my brain just turns to mush.
All of my creativity is sucked dry and that doesn't leave much for my blog.

Earlier I looked through my pictures and all I could think to write was uhhhh,
errrrr.... ummmmm.... yeah.... colors.... words.... stuff....
blather.
Sucked dry, I tell ya.
And that's sad because there wasn't much there to start with.

So here are random pictures. That have nothing to do with each other.
And don't relate to this post in any way, other than to help explain where my brain is these days.

I miss summer.

I may have fallen asleep at my computer once or twice also.

This train is a toy that The Baby is obsessed with.
This picture will be printed for his wall at the farmhouse.

Lilo. I love to snuggle with her. Her ears are so soft.
I talk in choppy sentences. I'm sure that's a sign of extreme intelligence.

Polka dots. Magically appeared on The Girl's arm.
Very cute for a 9 year old.

More words here...

Insert funny saying here.

Imagine some life changing inspirational quote here.

The end.

Confessions.

I wear my sunglasses on my head because I think it looks cooler than a headband.

I sneak veggie crumbles into any dish I'm preparing with hamburger. My family has no idea.

I watch QVC to fall asleep at night.

I haven't exercised in months.

When the milk jug starts getting low, I add water. It gives me a few extra days before I have to grocery shop.

I have thousands of beads. When I die, I'll be known as the crazy bead lady.

I get sad when I get to the bottom of my iced coffee.

Sometimes when that happens, I pout a little, even though I'm all alone at my desk.

I had big plans to do a whole "cooking my way through The Pioneer Woman's cookbook" a la Julie and Julia. But I was waiting until we lived at the farm. And we still don't live at the farm. And now that I've waited so long, I've seen other bloggers doing it. So that idea is shot.

I have over 12,000 emails in my inbox.

That's an improvement from a couple months ago when it was over 15,000.

This is my idea of the perfect summer day.
Clothes drying on the line.
Iced tea.
Country Living magazine.
Soaking up the sun.

Anything you want to confess? Go for it. It'll just stay between me and you.

p.s. If you haven't entered the current jewelry giveaway, you still can!

p.p.s. The tea must be sweet.

This was the other night at our new place.
Our kids were playing in the corn field and you can see the huge storm behind them.
From our spot it was stunning. Beautiful.
But for the people under that storm, the hail, heavy rains and flooding were awful.

So often when we're in the middle of a storm we don't see the reason or beauty for it.
But when we're on the other side, the beauty becomes apparent.

If you're in the middle of something terrible just wait. Stand still.
It will pass. On the other side, you'll see the beauty.

"Be still and know that I am God!” Psalm 46:10

Ultimate Blog Party

***This Giveaway is now closed. Thanks!***

I've participated in this 3 years already, which means I've been blogging a very long time. (In blogging years, of course.) So this is my 4th year to participate.

For those who are new here, I'm Beki.
I have a jewelry business called The Rusted Chain.
And I'm also a portrait photographer.

Because that isn't enough to keep me busy, I have three kids, two dogs, a husband (just one of those), 3 houses (two of which we're trying to sell), 3 cars (two of which are dead)...

I know you have lots of links to visit so I'll make this short and sweet.
I am not a great hostess.
You'll have to grab your own drink.

But one thing I do well is give away jewelry!

~ So, all you need to do is leave a comment and you're entered to win a $30 gift certificate to The Rusted Chain!

~ Tweet, facebook, or blog about it and receive additional entries.
Be sure to leave a comment for each of these.

Happy Partying!

Unexpected visit...

You know how you have those times when everything seems against you?
That's been my week.
By Tuesday, I was already hoping for a weekend.
Anything I said or typed or did was sure to upset someone in some way.
I've just buried my head in my work, tried to ignore the nasty, and focus on the positive instead.

And yesterday I got a surprise phone call from my dad.
He was nearby on business. He lives in another state, so it was exciting that he was so close!
We decided to meet for dinner and then head out to show him our new farmstead.
Which still needs a name... Badger Creek. Rusted Hills. Rusted Creek. Rusted Station. Who knows...

An entire evening and the only picture I got was a dirty plate in the restaurant.
By the way, local people, the new Italian restaurant just up the road is very good!
I'm a bit of a restaurant snob and I was impressed. That's saying a lot.

But I'm thrilled with one single picture of a marinara plate because we just spent time enjoying each other.
Laughing at my kids.
Talking.
Wandering around the farm.
Looking at the sunset.
It was the perfect breath of fresh air needed in the middle of a frustrating week.
And my dad is such a great guy.
I know he always has my back, no matter what.
My dad and The Man are the two best men I've ever known.

I was grateful that God put things back into perspective for me.
Sunshine. Fresh air. Blooming flowers. Kids laughing. Dogs jumping on me. Good lighthearted conversations. Lasagna that I didn't have to cook. Dishes that I didn't have to wash.
Leftovers for lunch today.

Good stuff.

I will be...

Today I will be happier than a pig in poop.
I will be happier than a bird with a french fry.
I will be happier than a fat tick on a skinny dog.

I love old bottles. We actually found these Dr. Pepper bottles buried in our yard.

I will be happier than a sunflower on a cloudless day.
I will be happier than a tornado in a trailer park.
I will be happier than a possum at pokeberry time.
I will be happier than a clam at a people bake.

I will choose happiness.

One day.

Yesterday was crazy.
We went to early service which is always a bad decision.
Late service is the only way to go, for our family.
Coffee.
Church.
Easter.
Clothes.
Egg hunt.

Ridiculous amounts of candy.
Cousins.
Me scolding a 13 yr old relative in front of her parents. (awkward!)
But I'm tired of her bullying my kids.
Badger killer. (well, he shot it anyway. Then the badger ran down into his hole. If it starts stinking, we'll know he's dead I suppose.)

Nearly ran out of gas on the way home.
Stopped at a station and found out there were large amounts of rocks and grass in our gas tank.
In. Our. Tank.
Bad Baby strikes again.
"Did you put rocks in the car?!"
"Yep."
"How did you get the gas cap off?!"
"Turned it."

Grumpy husband.
Hormonal crying Beki.
Bad Baby starts running a fever.
Which is probably a good thing because I couldn't be too mad at a sick kid.
Two big kids sensed the tension and knew to just stay hidden away, playing Webkinz.
Unusuable car now.
We'll take it to the shop when we get time.
It was a crazy day and I was so thankful when it ended.

Today's Monday, but I'll take a Monday anytime over that kind of Sunday.
