A simple life...

I'll be honest. (always am...) Sometimes I feel left out.
Sometimes I feel like the world is passing me by.
I feel like everyone else has all the good stuff and I don't.
I want so many things. Big and small. I suppose that's just our nature - to constantly want more.
I find myself constantly wanting this and that and then more of this.

And then I realize that I really need nothing.

I love my simple life.
Sure it would be great to travel more, but I have some pretty amazing scenery right out my windows.

I'd love to spend more money on cute shoes, better phones, new toys... you know - "stuff".
But it sure feels nice to not have debt hanging over our heads.

The truth is that I have a simple life. And it's a good thing.
I have a roof over my head, cars to drive, warm clothes, warm food, a family who loves me, and laughter. Lots and lots of laughter.

I have all I need.
I just need to stop and take notice of it sometimes.

Planning Pretty.

One of my New Year's goals is go get more organized. (as always. Oh, and lose those 15 lbs. too... yeah.)
I used to use a planner regularly but somehow fell out of the habit.

So I thought if I had a pretty one, I'd be more likely to use it.
My thoughts immediately went to duct tape.
What? You don't think "pretty" and "duct tape" in the same sentence?
You should. I'm loving their new patterns, including this black and white damask.

I just did strips of duct tape down the front of the book.
I could've lined up the pattern like you would with wall paper, but I'm a bit too lazy for that.

I also covered the inside cover, just to make it feel more finished and secure.
The coordinating black and white swirly pages were a bonus.

So cute!! But it wasn't quite done.
I hot glued a flower in my favorite shade of teal to the front.
And then topped it with a Swarovski crystal.

Black and white damask? Check.
Teal/Turquoise/Aqua flower? Check.
Sparkly bling? Check.
Pretty planner to keep me organized? Check.

*****
Have you used duct tape for anything pretty or fun?

When it's cold, when it's gray, when there seems to be no life at all... if you just look hard enough, there's still beauty to be found.

You're Beautiful.

Maybe you think you have too many gray hairs.
You're beautiful.

Maybe you pour your heart and soul into blogging and get little to no reponse.
You're still beautiful.

Maybe your skin doesn't look like it once did.
You're beautiful.

Maybe you have struggled to build your small business, but still only have a handful of followers on facebook or twitter.
Doesn't matter. You're beautiful.

Maybe you didn't get to go to the cool blog conference everyone else got to attend, because of finances or childcare.
Oh well. You're beautiful.

Maybe you've been stepped on or pushed down by people you cared about.
You're beautiful.

Maybe you've looked back at old photos of yourself and can't believe how thin you were.
It's okay. You're beautiful.

Maybe you feel trapped in a lonely world as a stay-at-home-mom.
You're beautiful.

Maybe you feel like you're the only traditional wife left in your community.
It's alright. You're beautiful.

You are beautiful. Chosen, cherished, designed by God.
Sacred. Loved. Treasured.
If He cares enough to make even the wildflowers lovely, how much more care has He put into creating you?

Believe it. Own it!

The Day...

...may have started with a puppy whining at 4:30am wanting out of her crate.

...that puppy may have continued that whine until 6:30 when I finally gave in and just got up.

...may have had dog puke in my bed.

...may have had 2 big kids who nearly missed the bus.

...may have had a very grumpy 4 year old.

...may have had a very sleepy mama.

...but it ended with cupcakes.

And all was right in the world again.

The end.

Have you seen the heart shaped marshmallows? My kids are obsessed with them!
And they're strawberry flavored.
So delicious.

How to take pretty pictures. (part 3)

If you haven't already, read Part 1 and Part 2 of this series.

Last time we learned how to take photos in manual mode. Snazzy.
It's fun right? But we definitely jumped ahead a little. What good does being in Manual do if you don't understand what you're doing?

I just wanted to show you that it's entirely possible for you to master this.

So you learned that you can scroll the little wheel on top of your camera and when the arrow lands in the center of the ruler, it's a perfect exposure.

But what makes it perfect? The balance of Aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.

So how do I know what aperture I need?
That, my dears, is the question of the century. It took me months and months of tantrum throwing fits to wrap my head around this.

The three pieces work together to form a triangle.
I, personally, pay very little attention to my shutter speed.
In the top left of my camera screen there is a number that's sometimes 100, sometimes as high as 4000. That's the shutter speed.
Imagine it as a fraction. If it shows 250, you're shooting at 1/250 of a second.

I try to keep it at 1/100th or faster, but other than that I don't pay a lot of attention to it. I'm more concerned with the ISO and aperture.

If it drops too low, I'm going to have a slow shutter which can result in motion blur in my photo. To compensate for that I need to let more light into the camera.
I let more light in by increasing the ISO (which also increases the noise or grain) or lowering the aperture number.

A great resource to start understanding aperture is Pioneer Woman's What the Heck is an Aperture guide.

I'll give you the abreviated version.

In addition to allowing a certain amount of light into your camera, aperture also determines the focal depth. (depth of field)

And because the photography gods like to mess with our heads, the lower the number (something like an f2.0), the more light is coming into the camera.
The higher the number (something like an f22), the less light is coming into the camera.

It hurts the brain, doesn't it.

For shooting dark indoor candlelit weddings, photographers like to have a lens that will go down to f1.4 or f1.2 because it lets in so much more light.

If you want everything in your photo to be in focus, you need a high number aperture.

If you want a small part of the photo to be in focus and the rest to be blurred (a.k.a. bokeh), you need a low number aperture.

Take a look at these photos.
My aperture was too low, ISO was too high, and I ended up with an overexposed picture.
Too bright. I needed to have less light coming into the camera.

I lowered the ISO number, and increased the aperture number a little. (when you're talking aperture numbers, a little goes a long way.)
This time it was much better. My focal point was set in the bottom center and you can see that her eyes are pretty clear while the rest of her body is blurred.

It's still not a great photo, but definitely an improvement.

If I had increased my aperture a lot, her entire body would be in focus.
However if I'd left the other settings alone, it also would've made the photo much darker because I needed a slower shutter speed.

It's all about keeping that imaginary triangle balanced. Aperture/ISO/Shutter Speed.

I had to scroll that little wheel again which is changing the shutter speed. The camera is smart enough to know what speed is needed based on the other settings you give it.

Imagine that the shutter is the eye of the camera and it's naturally closed all the time. When you push the button it opens. It either opens and recloses very quickly, or it opens, pauses, and then recloses. That long pause is a slow shutter speed that will give you motion blur. (sometimes this is fun to play with! Look at my photos from the Martha Stewart party. I used a 3 second shutter speed to get the cool blurred traffic photos.)
The camera was telling me I was very very wrong when my arrow wasn't centered, but I ignored it and forced the slow shutter. My camera is not the boss of me.

Lost? I hope not.

Read back over it all if you need to. I'm not ashamed to admit that it took me months and months of reading the same things before it finally clicked.

You can do it!

So, I guess I'm a redneck.

Because CMT emailed me yesterday to tell me that My Big Redneck wedding is back this Friday.

Why?!
Just because I post pictures of my kid in saggy tighty whities?

Because these are my neighbors?

Because our idea of a good time is pulling topless kids around in a trailer behind our four wheeler?

Because people ride their horses down our road?

Because my kid has a constant sticky face and dirty nails?

I'm really stumped why CMT would think I'm a redneck.

The email read:
"Hey Beki!

We noticed you have a great blog and guess what… your favorite guilty pleasure is back! A brand new season of My Big Redneck Wedding, hosted by Tom Arnold, premieres this Friday (Jan. 21) at 9/8c on CMT!"

So there you go, y'all. I'm sharing the word with you.
- If you've ever wondered what it's like to have a weiner eating contest at a wedding reception, watch the show.
- If you've ever wondered what it's like to see bridemaides in camoflauge dresses, watch the show.
- If you've ever wondered what it's like to see wedding guests sitting on mismatched couches in the yard of their trailer park to see the wedding, watch the show.
- If you ever need a self esteem boost, watch the show.
- If you want to see a bride beg her groom to wear his teeth for the ceremony, watch the show.

Now I'm off to roll up my overalls, stomp some buckets of grapes, add vodka and call it wine! I learned it from the show.

(Seriously... Why did they email me?)

Random question today: Do you get the winter blahs? How do you fight it?

Monday.

Today feels so much like a .... Monday.
I went back to sleep this morning after I sent the kids off to school.
I'm always convinced it will feel sooooo good. And it does. But then I regret it.
I'm groggy. I'm running behind.
I'm scattered. My to do list is so long I'm not even sure where to start.

I feel like it would take a room full of those office motivational posters to get me on track.
You know the ones I'm talking about, right? With the hiker on the mountain, the whale jumping out of the ocean.
Ugh. Those things are so cheesy. I love that they're in the background on The Office sometimes.
Have you seen the demotivational ones? LOVE! They crack me up.

Irony = I stayed up too late last night reading a motivational book.

For now I'll start eating this elephant one bite at a time. Taking the first step.
But first I need another cup of coffee. And a good laugh.

Aren't you glad you stopped in here for a Monday pep talk?

(photos are straight out of the camera. Our sunsets have been amazing lately!)

How to take pretty pictures (part 2)

You always hear professional photographers say that a person should only shoot in manual.
(And I absolutely cringe when I hear of a "professional" - someone who's charging money for their services - who doesn't know how to shoot in manual.)

But it's not just for professionals.
Do you get frustrated when your flash goes off and you don't want it to?
Do you get a lot of motion blur in your photos?
Think you can't take pictures indoors because it never works right?
You're wrong. All of these can be fixed fairly easily by shooting in manual!

You can manipulate that camera much more than you even realize. So get ready to work it, girl!

Get your camera. And get your manual.
And if you haven't already, read Part 1 of this series.

I'm not the best photographer out there. Please don't think I'm insinuating that I know it all.
I know a little and still have soooooo much to learn.
But I've been asked over and over lately for help with people's cameras. So I thought I'd try to help you too.
This is a very basic, simple lesson.

There are 3 basic pieces to a properly exposed photo - The photographic triangle. (properly exposed means, not too light, not too dark, not too blurry, not too grainy. Just a nice clean photo.)
1. ISO
2. Shutter Speed
3. Aperture

I'm not going to go too deep into the meaning of each of these, right now.
Know that aperture is the same thing as an F-Stop. You'll also see it listed as something like f2.0. The lower the number, the more light is coming into your camera. The higher the number, the less light is coming in.

Switch your camera over to the big scary M. Do it!
Find something in the room to take a photo of. (I shouldn't admit that all of my first manual pictures were taken of my big toe, in a fairly dark room at midnight. Hey, whatever works.)

One of the biggest things you'll have to learn and practice is knowing settings off the top of your head.

I'm going to say you're in an average lit room right now. So set your ISO to 800 to start off with. (This is where you need your camera manual - to learn to adjust these settings.)

ISO's at 800? Good.
Now set your aperture to f4. If you can't do f4, go as low as you can. It may be
f5.6 or so.

Put the camera up to your eye, point it at your big toe or object of choice, press the shutter button halfway down, and through the viewfinder you'll see a "ruler" at the bottom. The goal is to get the arrow as close to the center as possible.

Center = perfect exposure!

Scroll the little wheel on top of your camera back and forth until it lands in the center.
If your arrow is right of the center line, your photo will be overexposed = brighter.
If your arrow is left of the center line, your photo will be underexposed = darker.

Now push the button. Do it! Congratulations, you just took a photo in Manual!

Now play with the settings a bit. Drop the ISO down to 400, take another shot and see how it looks. Up the ISO to 1600, take another shot and see how it looks.

Drop the f-stop lower and see what happens. Raise it and see what happens.

Go outside and find a twig or flower, lower your ISO (since you have much more natural light outside, you don't need such a high number ISO), and shoot it.

Pretty, huh?!

And you thought it was hard to take pretty pictures...

If you live local to me, I'm going to be doing a photography day soon.
No charge, of course!
Just a day to come hang out on the farm and I can help you in person with your camera. If you're interested, let me know.

It's big and scary, but I promise if I can learn to do this, you can too!

(sorry for the blurry photo)

I love those moments when God hits you over the head. You are struggling with something, thinking something, questioning something, and suddenly the answer is right in your face. Sometimes it comes in a book, a song on the radio, a sign on the side of the road, who knows....
But God knows exactly where to place things at the exact moment we need the answers!

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” - 1 John 4:20-21

On being blonde...

Guess what? I'm a ditz. Scatterbrained. A dingbat. Blonde.
My excuse has always been my hair color, but I know that I'd still be spacey even if I were a redhead or brunette.

Once I found a seller on etsy that made children's tees and one had an astronaut on it with the words "Space Cadet."
I asked if she could make it in a grown up size. She did. I wear it proudly!

I try to fight it as well as I can.
I make lists, follow a calendar, keep notes.
I always put my keys in the exact same pocket in my purse so I know where they are.
I always put my lipglosses in the same pocket in my purse too, so I don't misplace them.
I always park in the same aisle at the WalMarts. Always. The Man makes fun of me but I don't care.
It doesn't matter if it's the furthest spot down that aisle, I park there. And I never lose my car! You'll never see me wandering the parking lot confused.
But if I strayed from my plan, sure as heck, I'd be all sorts of lost.

Good things about being an airhead?
Constant surprises. It's like Christmas over and over.

I can watch a movie 5 times and be surprised at the ending every time. I never remember what happens!

Every year when I pack away my winter coat, I leave a suprise for myself in the pocket. $5, a new lipgloss, or whatever.
And every year in the fall when I pull out my coat, I'm always thrilled at what I find!

I'm still finding Christmas presents that I stashed away but forgot where I put them. Fun! This might go on for months.
Some of the presents I even bought for myself, knowing I wouldn't remember it.

Sometimes I find clothing in my closet with the tags still on, that I don't remember buying.

Is this terrible to admit?

I fight it. I really do. I take every step I can to stay organized.
But without fighting it, I'd be a big hot mess!
You know... a bigger hotter mess than I already am.

I'm a very Type B person, fighting desperately to be a Type A.
*****
What about you? Are you organized? Disorganized?

p.s. Lilo loves snow. And Beki loves 8 frames per second on her camera.

New baby....

Two actually.

This is my first new baby. I lurrrrve her! I promised myself that if TheRustedChain sold $X in December, I'd treat myself to a new camera.
We far surpassed the goal. YAY!!
So I splurged. I never spend money on myself. Seriously.
Those who know me in real life are like, "Seriously just go get a haircut already."
So this was a huge deal for me to do.

The other new baby is a bit cuter. And poopier.

This is Ellie.
We wanted a Disney name. Because we have Lilo. And we had Stitch until he ran away over the summer.
So after much discussion the entire family decided on Ellie. It's Carl's wife in Up, one of our favorite movies!

I could've resisted but The Man couldn't. He's a complete sap when it comes to puppies.
So we adopted her.

I'm so grateful for hardwood floors throughout the house.

Winter at Badger Creek.

This is the first real snow we've had since moving out to the farm. It came down overnight.
And oh my goodness, it's beautiful!

I only had a few minutes this morning to snap a few photos. I wanted to take hundreds more.
We have lots of jewelry orders that need mailed today. So I have to do real work, not just play.
But I could've stayed out there taking pictures all day long. Well, alternating being outside with coming in to warm up with hot coffee.

THAT would be perfect.
And now I see the snow coming down again.
Happy Monday to you!
